The Demise Of The Newspaper Is Undermining Our Society .
Devlin Smith
In recent years the newspapers have been making a switch to paperless new stories, by instead publishing online articles. Many news papers have eliminated their companies completely and switched to these online news websites. Print news papers are struggling to survive, along with most of their employees. The switch to technology has affected the society and will cause an unnecessary number of jobless employees.
Technology allows for us to consume information fast, and online news websites have allowed us to get the scoop on what happens almost right after it happens. The concern of reliability and credible sources however, then comes in to play. The point of even having news papers is so that citizens can be well informed about what is happening around them. Everyone wants news as soon as it happens, and they may not be covering all the bases as far as reliability is concerned. The time constraints of needing to be the first to cover a story and put it up online, allow for a lot of missed content, and uninformed citizens.
Many think that this switch is a necessary move towards a better environment, because paper production uses up trees and water in the process. The paper industries need to be ones making the initiative to make their paper making process better for the environment. Making it very environmentally friendly, allowing for people to keep their jobs and giving the public what they need to be participating Democratic citizens.
To completely switchover to online news sites would mean the collapse of the paper industry. Newspapers in print have been around a very long time and provide jobs for thousands of people. The loss and toll that it will take on the people who will be losing their jobs because of this change over to technology, would be devastating. This link illustrates the current loss of jobs in 2009 and it doesn't show signs of slowing down.
I can see that the environment is important, but right now we need to consider that people's jobs and welfare are on the line. In order for this economy to be stable again it is necessary that we create new jobs for people. Instead of cutting ones that are unnecessary to get rid of in the first place. Bigger news papers like the New York Times, have kept the welfare of their workers in mind. These big time news papers still have a print news paper, but also have a website so that people can choose what way is best for them to consume their news. However, they need to keep the news in print, they have a responsibility to their workers and society to keep the employment rate going up instead of continuing the current down spiral, with cutting jobs for no good reason.

Devlin,
ReplyDeleteYou make very good arguments on why the demise of the paper is a negative thing for the whole economy. It is taking away our jobs and the source of income papers used to make is slowly decreasing.
If the demise of the news paper continues to keep going the way it is, pretty soon all of our ways and traditions of newspapers will be gone.
Not only does the newspaper give a great source of jobs and information to the economy, writers for the big time news papers like The New York times are credible sources. A lot of news stories you see onine are by bloggers. Silverblatt talks about how credible sources are so important. How is someone with no background of media writing considered credible?
Does this mean anyone could be a news source. We need to take another look at the situation, and think about where we are getting our news contributes to the the economy our new information and shapes as a whole. We cannot rely on blogs and unworthy news sources and expect to stay a Civic Culture, as Dahlgren would say. News values and our intelligence on the world around us is very important.
We need to stop getting our news from blogs, and bring credible news sources back. We can keep the economy going if we just look at the big picture of how much we could help the economy if we just took the time to buy a $1.oo newspaper. It keeps us informed acurately and can make a tremendous posotive impact on our already damaged economy.

Devlin,
ReplyDeleteYou make very good arguments on why the demise of the paper is a negative thing for the whole economy. It is taking away our jobs and the source of income that papers used to make and is now slowly decreasing. Do we even know if these sources we are getting our news from are accurate or credible? The demise of the newspaper is really taking its toll on the economy as a whole.
If the demise of the news paper continues to keep going the way it is, pretty soon all of our ways and traditions of newspapers will be gone. How can we really just forget about something so important and that gives us our news of what’s going on in our world and in an accurate way? I we do just forget about the newspaper and rely on online news eventually there will not be online papers. There will be no New York Times online because it will not exist without making money from the actually paper. There will be no employees to write the articles, get the idea? Devlin you explain all of the negative things that will happen if we just let the demise of the newspaper to continue.
