The fall of the newspaper

The rise of Online News

I do not feel that the demise of the newspaper is a big deal. I personally have not read a newspaper in a long time, i mostly get my news information from the Internet. I think that some newspapers moving to online is a good move, it provides people with up to date information that they can access at any time they need it, wherever they need it. More and more people now are going to the Internet to receive their news with people having faster paced lives. So i think that newspapers should embrace this and have an online version so they can make sure that the people that are going online to get their news are getting from a credible source.

The big worry of some people is that the news that is online is not credible enough and that getting it from a newspaper will be more credible. However if newspapers like the Seattle Post-Intelligencer had an online version people wouldn't have to worry as much about it being credible. However the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has switched completely to an online newspaper in March of this year for the fact that people now want their news as fast as possible.

Also people are worried if newspapers move to online that people will lose jobs. I understand this concern, with the Seattle newspaper moving online some jobs were lost, but if newspapers kept their newspaper and added an online version on to it, there could be a possibility to add jobs for people. That would also add the possibility of people being able to work at of their homes which could allow them to spend more time with their families.

This has been occurring more and more with newspapers. Some major newspapers have online versions like the nytimes you can get all the information that you can get from the newspaper and more with the online version. This is a great resource for people that want to read from the nytimes but don't want to have to subscribe for a newspaper, it helps people save money and allows them to get their news when they need it.

I feel that the switch from print news to online news is inevitable and that newspaper companies should embrace the switch. With all of the technology that people have now and the fact that people have smaller attention spans people don't want to have to sit down and read a newspaper when they can get other things done and get news on their computers at work or on a laptop somewhere else where they wouldn't have a newspaper. I think that once newspapers embrace technology and the era of online news they will be able to move foraward.

  2. Ethan,

I agree with your original statement in that I mostly use my computer, which makes it convenient to read news online. In your first paragraph, you mention that newspapers should have an online version, which many newspapers already have. This can be seen at UWM, the UWM Post is now online and can be easily accessed through the internet at, http://www.uwmpost.com/.

I liked how you commented on people losing their jobs because it is inevitable if newspapers become extinct. However, I liked that you discussed alternatives: people could write their articles from the comfort of their own home and publish online. In working out of their home, they can multi-task with family concerns and deadlines.

Also, you touched on the aspect of saving money. That is a huge plus with online news because people wouldn't have to buy newspaper each week or subscribe to one. There is also the idea of “going green” that many online websites are speaking of. In publishing news online companies would not have to spend money on paper.

Online news is rapidly increasing and it is becoming more difficult to slow this trend down. In http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aJf0ZOXN22jY , papers continue to decline as the Internet news continues to climb. Unless online news starts charging people to read, it will continue to be a downward spiral for newspapers and from the looks of it, this is not happening soon.

According to Hirschberg, “buys have become stoutly resistant to advertisements. ..” (274) I think this partakes in your last paragraph as you stated, people that have smaller attention spans do not care to sit down and read through 12 pages in the newspaper, especially when they are cluttered with advertisements. Newspapers are filled with advertisements and articles that people aren’t interested in. Online news offers minimal advertisements and highlights specific stories for you. They also offer videos and colorful headlines to catch the reader's eye.

I agree with you in that newspapers should try and embrace this change because by the looks of it, online news is not slowing down.
